HYDRANAL™ – Solvent

HYDRANAL™ – Solvent is an alcohol-based solution containing sulfur dioxide and imidazole, used as the solvent component in Karl Fischer titration, particularly in two-component volumetric methods. There are two main types of HYDRANAL solvents: one based on methanol (for standard reagents) and the other based on ethanol (for E-type reagents).

Karl Fischer Titration:

HYDRANAL-Solvent is part of the Karl Fischer titration system, a widely accepted standard method for determining water content in a wide variety of samples.

Components:

This solvent contains sulfur dioxide and imidazole, which work together to react with the water present in the sample.

Types of Solvent:

There are two types of HYDRANAL solvents, distinguished by the type of alcohol used:

  • Methanol-based (for use with standard titrants)

  • Ethanol-based (for use with E-type titrants)
The choice of solvent depends on the titrant type and the nature of the sample being tested.

Function:

HYDRANAL solvent serves to:

  • Dissolve the sample, and

  • Facilitate the reaction between the water in the sample and the titration reagent (usually iodine)
to achieve a precise titration endpoint.

Adaptation:

Other HYDRANAL solvent variants, with different solvent mixtures, are available to meet the specific requirements of diverse sample types.
